As regular readers will know the group of Sky Blues players who took the club to their day of destiny at Wembley in May 1987 have always remained close. Apart from at least two major ‘set piece’ anniversary reunions (25th & 30th) at Nailcote Hall, the guys meet up whenever they can in less formal settings. CCFPA committee member Dave Bennett, who scored one of City’s goals in that 3-2 extra time win over ‘Spurs, has often been instrumental in keeping, particularly for those ‘Boys of ’87’ who still live locally, links going and organising get-togethers.
The latest mini-reunion took place last Sunday and involved the Sky Blue ‘gaffer’ of the time John Sillett (who also was previously JH Sky Blue defender in the sixties) and, as well as ‘Benno’, Brian Borrows, Micky Gynn, David Phillips, Steve Ogrizovic and Trevor Peake. All were involved on the pitch in that wonderful Sky Blue day in May except Brian who was sadly injured in the semi-final and had to watch from a hospital bed. Also at the reunion was CCFPA President Kirk Stephens, who left the club in 1986 before getting a chance to appear in that F.A.Cup campaign and committee members Sarah and Richard Morris. (Thanks Rich for the pic).
As can be seen above the group of players had another great time with plenty of laughs and reminiscences. No doubt there was also time given to remembering ‘absent friends’ and the significant role in the successful Cup run of former colleague and Sky Blue legend Cyrille Regis who passed away just two years ago yesterday.
It was good to see all participants present both hale and hearty as they look forward to a new decade -we are sure there will be many more!
