Matchday Memories: On This Day 1985 – See 'Killer' Keep Sky Blues Survival Hopes High At Hatters!

CCFC Manager Don Mackay

On this day (23rd May) in 1985 the Sky Blues were on another audacious end of season mission to save their top flight status. In twentieth spot in Division One Don Mackay‘s Sky Blues needed a win treble from their last three games to stand a chance of survival. Six days previously at Stoke City a second half Stuart Pearce penalty had begun the attempt well with a 1-0 victory at the Victoria Ground.

Now for the second act! The Sky Blues took on Luton Town in a Thursday night game at Highfield Road in front of 14,834 very nervous fans. They knew the Hatters had beaten us by two clear goals at Kenilworth Road on Boxing Day! Revenge would be especially sweet.

Killer in the Sky Blue

The Hatters put up gritty resistance and the sides went in a half-time with no score (‘Oggy’ saving us more than once). A good penalty shout for the Sky Blues was ignored by the referee and nails were being bitten to the quick around the stadium when late in the game, with only six minutes to go, a half clearance from the away side allowed the Sky Blues mountainous centre half Brian Kilcline to volley in a tremendous goal life-line from the edge of the box.

A repeat score line against the Hatters in the Championship play-off Final at Wembley ina few days time would not go amiss!!

Luton Town‘s goalkeeper that day was former Sky Blue shotstopper Les Sealey (who sadly has since passed away).

Two down with one to go – and this was only a game against the champions Everton at Highfield road in three days time! This Sunday game would decide the Sky Blues fate (see later post)!

Steve Ogrizovic, Ian Butterworth, Stuart Pearce, Kenny Hibbitt (sub. Micky Gynn) Brian Kilcline, Trevor Peake, Dave Bennett, Lloyd McGrath, the late Cyrille Regis, Terry Gibson and Micky Adams.

We are delighted to say that every single member of that team later went on to join this Association! It was great to see Oggy, Micky, Trevor, Benno and Terry back in Coventry at the CBS Arena a few weeks back at Legends Day 2023.

David Pleat‘s Hatters team lined up as follows:-
The late Les Sealey, Tim Breacker, Mitchell Thomas, Peter Nicholas, Steve Foster, Mal Donaghy, Ricky Hill, Brian Stein, Mick Harford, Emeka Nwajiobi and David Preece (sub. Raymond Daniel)      Referee:- B.Stevens

Apart from ‘keeper Les there were other Sky Blues connections with the Luton team at this time. Mick Harford, who played today, had a scoring debut from the subs bench for the Sky Blues in 1993-94 and never played again for CCFC (though he did later join CCFPA). Also on the Hatters’ books this season was Ashley Grimes who was a Sky Blue the previous campaign, ‘keeper Jake Findlay who went on to be goalkeeping cover at Highfield Road in the eighties (without getting a first team outing) and Frankie Bunn was on City’s coaching staff from 2008-10.

CCFC 1984-85
As is now well known the Sky Blues made their ‘great escape’ by beating the Toffees 4-1 at Highfield Road on the 26th May and thus they managed to finish eighteenth, two places and a single point above the drop (taken by Norwich City, Sunderland and Stoke City).

Luton Town finished a creditable thirteenth in Division One and, as already stated, Everton took the title from close neighbourhood rivals Liverpool by a substantial thirteen points!
